People ask me how over the last 36 years I've trained successful SAR dogs?

First I rescue them from the Dog Shelter or where ever.
Next I make them a part of my family. They eat, walk, play, sleep, together and learn what the basic rules are.

Next I work on obedience on and off lead, whistle training, fire arms training, agility, and socialization.

As in any family each brings forward their own quirks, fears, strengths, etc. I try to work on those issues as we proceed.

Next I work on basic "Runaways" Let them watch someone go hide and have them go find them" gets them into the "Search mode".

I then work on object finds. Knife, cell phone, keys, firearms, cadaver scent tubes (PCV tubes filled with a single human tooth or human hair).

I don't stress them out. I help them be successful each and every search. Even if they fail to find the item on their own, I'll guide them until they figure it out. 100% love hugs and kisses.

Then I make them start working hard. Water searches, buried victims, in dirt, snow, etc.

Change it up weekly so they don't get too bored.

Tennis ball and or tug of war with an old sock as their reward toys.

Have a person lay a scent trail. Come in three weeks later and have them track them to the ending point.

Documenting date time location type of training air temp wind speed direction. and time start time end and notes on how they did.

This is it. Very basic keep it simple stupid methods that have worked for over 9,000 dogs and handlers that I've trained. 7 for me personally.

Many years ago, I got called to come search for a missing show dog.

He escaped a bad MVA on i-5 near Chehalis, Wa.

his owners hadn't put him in a seat belt and he was ejected at high speed onto the freeway.

He ran as he was scared.

My SAR dogs and I tracked him a mile away to a field where we were able to catch him and send him home.

Another documented happy ending by Harry oakes and search dogs.

March 20, 2002 myself with my search dog Valorie and Michelle with her sar dog Yogi located Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis' remains on Ward Weavers property in Oregon City.

I wrote a report and gave one to Oregon City PD, Portland office of the FBI, and to each of the families.

In my report (You can review copies of it in my free book "Search and Rescue"). I informed the authorities exactly where each of the bodies were.

This after the OCPD, State of Oregon Cert. SAR Dogs and Federal FBI dogs all failed to find anything in their 7 searches of Wards' property.

The FBI informed us to "Back off" as they were watching Ward.
It was their case so we backed off after I reported our findings. In all reality, they could have gotten a search warrant based on our findings and recovered the remains immediately. Instead on Aug 25, 2002, they hadn't done a damn thing. I was pissed and contacted a Senator in Oregon who made the FBI go in the next day and use their "ground penetrating radar" to confirm my findings which they did and they recovered both remains exactly where I said they were.

Even Ward Weaver during his arrest interview informed them I was 100% correct.

The FBI and OCPD FUBAR'ed this case. Refused to apologize to Michelle, myself, or to the families for their mishandling of this case and refusal to listen to me.

This is just one example of 100's of documented finds in Oregon and Washington that i've made over the years and law enforcement dislikes me doing "Their job" for them.

The victim's families and MSNBC Dateline into Thin air story gave us 100% credit for the finds.

Yesterday I received an email asking for help in finding a lost kitten. A month old orange tabby named ACE. The owner Shelbi" was desperate.

She explained to me that the front door was accidentally left open around 6 am and it was now four pm and she discovered the kitten was missing and they had searched everywhere.
She explained to me that she had 5 other cats and one Jindo (Korean) dog.
I explained to her how to use her dog and perform a methodical search inside the apartment and then working outside.
Around 6 pm I got this message from her.
"We got him! 20 ft away hiding under tarps in the neighbors yard. Thank you thank you thank you".
I love when people listen to me.

Please remember, We're an International K9 SAR Service that provides service all around the world. So don't get your panties up in a bunch when I ask what your address is when you email or call so I can mapquest your location to determine travel abilities, time, costs, and threat levels to our sar teams.

Twice this week I had clients get all pissy because I needed to know their address so I can look at their location to try and help them.
Don't want to give me your address? Don't ask for my help.
This is all about safety to my teams and my ability to provide the best service I can for you.

thanks
